NNPC begins oil exploration in Bauchi

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and a Chinese company, Bureau for Geophysical Corporation, have begun mobilising to Alkakeri, Darazo, Misau in Bauchi State to commence the drilling of oil wells in the coming months. The exploration is expected to bring employment and other economic opportunities to the state. The Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, disclosed this when he led top management staff on a courtesy visit to the Bauchi State Governor. He said, “NNPC’s renewed commitment for further exploration in the Gongola Basin is informed by directives to NNPC by President Muhammdu Buhari to resume oil exploration activities in Gongola and Chad Basins following successful commercial discoveries of oil and gas in neighbouring Niger, Chad and Central African Republic in their portion of the Chad Basin.” The NNPC boss recalled that exploration activities in the Chad Basin began in 1974, continued in 1996 to 2000 when gas was discovered in non-commercia

NJC holds emergency meeting over DSS raids

The National Judicial Council will on Tuesday hold an emergency session,  The PUNCH  learnt on Sunday. It was learnt that the NJC originally scheduled the meeting solely to consider the candidate most suitable for appointment as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria from the list forwarded to it by the Federal Judicial Service Commission last week. But following the raids on the houses of some judicial officers by the men of the Department of State Services over the weekend, it was learnt that the outgoing CJN and the Chairman of both the NJC and FJSC, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, directed that the issue be included on the agenda of the scheduled emergency meeting. The DSS, at the end of the operations, which lasted at least 12 hours between Friday night and Saturday morning, arrested Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and John Okoro, both of the Supreme Court, as well as Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court in Abuja. World Bank, others to release $1.3bn for Nigeria’s development bank

The Federal Government has reached an agreement with the World Bank Group and other development partners for the release of $1.3bn for the take-off of the Development Bank of Nigeria. The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, said this on Sunday in Washington DC, United States of America at the closing press conference marking the end of the World Bank/International Monetary Fund’s annual meetings. Adeosun, who spoke alongside the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, explained that the DBN would serve as a means of intervention for the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in the country to get funds to run their operations and expand in order to achieve inclusive growth for the country. Buhari to hand over presidential jets to NAF

Barring any last-minute change in plan, President Muhammadu Buhari will on Monday hand over some aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet to the Nigerian Air Force,  SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt. A top Presidency source told our correspondent on condition of anonymity that the handover ceremony would hold at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Although the source was not forthcoming on the number of aircraft to be handed over to NAF, it was learnt that at least two of such presidential jets would be presented to the air force. The source said, “I can confirm to you that based on the directive of the president, the commander of the Presidential Air Fleet will hand over some aircraft in the fleet to the Nigeria Air Force on Monday. Mother strangles one-year-old to death

The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old woman identified as Mrs. Asabe Andrew for allegedly strangling her one-year-and-three-month-old daughter, Esther. According to the command, the suspect then dumped the baby’s body into a river in Gunduma. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abubakar Bello, who paraded the suspect in Lafia, said the command also apprehended a total of 20 armed robbery suspects for committing various offences, including armed robbery and car snatching. “One Asabe Bawa Andrew, 25, was arrested for strangulating her daughter, Esther Andrew, a one-year-and-three-month, and throwing the dead body into a river in Gunduma, Uke Development Area, Karu Local Government Area of the state,” he added. According to the police boss, one 20-year-old Kumi Jayi was also arrested for allegedly killing his friend, Hassan Adamu, 27, for making him impotent, after using a native concoction to enhance sexual performance.
