BrenCare Foundation Marks "The Day of African Child" in Bakassi IDP

16th June, 2018|Lifestyle|Omori, Omori

The 16th day of June every year is celebrated globally as The day of the African child.
It was first observed by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in honour of those who participated in the Soweto Uprising of 1976, June 16th.

On this day in 1976, about tens of thousands of Black school children marched in the street of Soweto to protest and demonstrate the poor quality of education and demanded for their right to be taught in their own language (Afrikaans). Hundreds of these students were shot dead and thousands of them sustained different degree of injuries.

On 15th of June, 2018 the Founder and CEO of BrenCare Foundation, Brenda Effiom who coincidentally clocked a year older took her team of volunteers and health care personnel to the Internally Displaced Persons ( IDP ) Camp in Bakassi for a one day symposium on Drug Abuse, Mental Health, Puberty and Menstration to commemorate the Day of the African Child.

The idea of taking to the IDP Camp was conceived from the theme of this year's celebration "LEAVE NO CHILD BEHIND, FOR AFRICA'S DEVELOPMENT".
The symposium featured talks, drama by the team of Volunteers. Items such as clothes, sanitary pad, shoes, tooth brushes, tooth pastes, toileteries and other hygienic materials were shared.

In response to the gesture, one of the beneficiary (name withheld) expresses pleasure and satisfaction over the items received and solicit for frequent such gestures and magnanimity to be carried out by government, individuals and other NGOs.

In her words 'I want to thank this foundation (BrenCare) for remembering us today. God will remember you people too. Let other people learn from this and come and do same. We need help here in this camp because we are suffering a lot.'

Nigerians are the ones that vandalized electricity installations-Presidency

According to presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, Nigerians are the ones that vandalized electricity installations in different parts of the country after the supply reached a 16-year-high of over 5000 megawatts. Speaking live on a radio show monitored by Greennews.ng in Lagos on Friday morning, Adesina wondered how the government could do its job when miscreants in places like Bayelsa choose to vandalize gas and electricity installations. “Do you remember that some time ago, the supply of power reached over 5000 megawatts. That was even more than how much had been generated in 16 years but then some people went to destroy government installations thereby dropping power to so low as it is now. “Who do we blame for that? When the power ministry announced that we had about 5000 megawatts about three weeks ago, it also promised that by December, another 2000 megawatts to be added to it. That will give 7000 megawatts. “That generated a lot of hopes. But those hopes were dampen...
