CRSG Inaugurates Health Emergency Response Team and State Drug Abuse Control Committee

The growing trend of 'codeine diet' amongst Nigerian youth that sees the daily consumption of  over three million bottles has resulted in the ban of importation and illegal use of some of these substances and also unveil the National Drug Control Master Plan (NDCMP) for 2015 to 2019 which aims to strengthen responses on drugs in order to contribute to the enhanced health, security and well-being of all Nigerians.

The Cross River State Government has has inaugurated a Health Emergency Response team in the State to work in synergy with the State Drug Abuse Control Committee (SDACC) headed by the Commissioner. According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Inyang Asibong, the move became necessary to curb the rising case of drug addiction.

"The incessant drug abuse among our youths recently has become worrisome which is why the Cross River State Government led by Sen. (Prof.) Ben Ayade has inaugurated this committee to not only clamp down on illegal use and purchases of these drugs, the team will also help these youths find their way back to being free through intermittent guidance and counseling.

The State Health Emergency Response covers key aspects of drug supply and reduction impacting Cross River State. the team will also ensure proper awareness and sensitization of the dangers of drug abuse starting from school aged children then to the adults.” She said.

Also present at the inauguration was the WHO State Co-ordinator; Dr. Tom Igbu, Chairman Pharmaceutical Society Of Nigeria CRS Chapter; Mr. Ekpenyong Effiong, the State Epidemiologist; Mrs. Patience Uke and the Acting Director Pharmaceutical Services Calapharm Nig Limited Secretary; Pastor Dan Michael. Also present were Representatives from Ministry of Women Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youths and Sports, National Orientation Agency, Nigerian Navy, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Chairman of Cross River State Community Pharmacists, all who took turns to laud the initiative and promised to support the State and the committee to ensure there's a strict compliance to the anti-drug abuse law in the State.

Codeine is an opiate used to treat pain, as a cough medicine, and for diarrhea. It is indicated in patients older than 12 years of age for the treatment of acute moderate pain which is not considered to be relieved by other analgesics such as paracetamol and the likes.

Apart from Codeine you also find youths these days sniffing soakaway or pit toilet, sniffing gum or burnt tyres, dried papaya leaves, sipping 10 days old urine, combining hypo/tomtom and lacaserra, ingesting lizard poo, Tramadol, Rephnol, Spyrogyra, methylated spirits and injecting the blood of cocaine addict into their bloodstream, all in a bid to 'get high'.
